Expressionism
What is Expressionism?
© Expressionism is a style of painting, music, or drama in which the artist or writer seeks to express the inner world of emotion rather than external reality.
© Expressionism was inspired most heavily by: Vincent van Gogh, Edvard Munch, and James Ensor. They encouraged the distortion (DEFORMATION) of form and the deployment (ARRANGEMENT) of strong colours to convey (TRANSMIT) a variety of anxieties and feelings.
© The classic phase of the Expressionist movement lasted from approximately 1905 to 1920 and spread throughout Europe. The arrival of Expressionism announced new standards in the creation and judgement of art. Art was now meant to come forth from within the artist, rather than from a depiction (DESCRIPTION) of the external visual world. The standard for assessing the quality of a work of art became the character of the artist's feelings rather than an analysis of the composition.
Our famous paintings!
The Scream (1893) by Edvard Munch
© One of our expressionism paintings is the famous painting ‘The scream’ made by Edvard Munch. You can recognise that it’s an expressionism painting by the emotion and distortion of some of the forms.
© Edvard experimented a lot before he decided that impressionism didn’t have enough expression. Now he is known as a big expressionism artist. Munch specialised in depicting human emotions like fear and insecurities. De colours, the expressive lines and the designs he used for this had a big impact on the development of Expressionism.
Large Blue Horses (1911) by Franz Marc
© We proudly present another expressionism painting in our gallery, made by Franz Marc. Franz Marc painted these blue horses in 1911.
© In reality blue horses don’t exist, but Marc didn’t care so much about the reality. Just like for many other expressionists it was about something else. He wanted to show us not only the outside, but the rest as well. He used this particular colour blue because he thought it represented the power of a horse perfectly. With the use of colours he shows us the inner side a of a horse. He distorts reality to express power and energy.
